Memo To Domainers – Stay Away From New gTLDs…They’re Not For You

So let’s talk about the new gTLDs because I think many Domainers have missed why I’m such a fan of them. For the millionth time let me say this very clearly – I don’t think the new gTLDs represent good investment opportunities for Domainers. As a domain investor I am putting the vast majority of my money into .COM and I don’t see that changing anytime in the next decade.

First Domains From Donuts Start Coming Out of the Oven Today

Though this will be a landmark release for Donuts, it will be just the first of almost weekly waves of new gTLDs they plan to release throughout 2014. The next batch - another group of seven (they must believe in lucky numbers) - will hit shore a week from tomorrow (Feb. 5) when .CAMERA, .EQUIPMENT, .ESTATE, .GALLERY, .GRAPHICS,.LIGHTING and .PHOTOGRAPHY all open for business.

Future of new GTLDs

Investors will be interesting to predict the returns on investments related to new GTLDs. As per my estimates only at maximum only a 10 to 15 new GTLDs will be able to withstand for longer time among the approximately 200 GTLDs that have been approved by ICANN. But investors will not be able to make much money on new GTLDs similar to .com domain names. But still it will give some space for investors but mostly space for business people who plan to develop new business models. So for internet it is added advantage and for .com domains it is disadvantage. .COM will always be the king but only thing is for low quality domains market will not give any premium going ahead and few low quality domain names will get deleted.

New gTLDs Ticker Is Sold Out (TheDomains.com/Domaining.com)

In announcing the new gTLD ticker that runs on both TheDomains.com and Domaining.com, we said it was going to be strictly limited to 20 strings and today we sold the remaining strings meaning all 20 spots are sold out.
If your a registry and want to be included in the ticker I’m opening up the waiting list which will be made on a first come first serve basis when any of the existing advertisers drop off.

New gTLD applicant talks: "new gTLDs are better than the .com extension"

Mr. Schindler believes that we have run out of quality names that can be hand registered in the .com market. He says that if you attempt to hand register a domain name “you can’t get a good name in the .com market.” He goes on to say, “What is left now are poor names, not meaningful names that you can go out and register for your business. It is obvious who should register .pizza, .attorney, and .restaurant, and no Super Bowl commercial is needed for consumers to understand what the brand means. Consumers automatically understand what .pizza means.”

TRAFFIC Conference to Hold No Reserve gTLD auction

Here is what Rick had to say about the auctions as well as the gTLD focus at this year’s TRAFFIC conference in Las Vegas: “T.R.A.F.F.I.C. Las Vegas will have a No Reserve gTLD auction with domains released directly from the registries plus 18 gTLD proponents representing as many as 2/3 of all the new extensions will be offered 5 minutes of podium time to pitch their new extensions to those that are interested".

Has Frank Schilling been the inspiration behind one company’s XXX spending spree ?

In the advent of the 1,000′s of gTld’s being released, the search engines “have” to change. the users need to adapt they way they search. Please watch this short video by Frank Shilling, the worlds biggest domineer (sic), and the early adopter of .xxx domains (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p75KeJN9D0E). He explains it way better than I could ever do. This video was fundamental in me embarking on the recent spending spree.

How I Plan to Profit from the gTLDs

I won’t buy unless I have a potential buyer in mind. Some companies like to own their business in every extension. If the operate on a dictionary word domain then it is fair game to purchase. I wouldn’t buy this for every gTLD out there, but for the ones where the domain extension makes sense with the keyword.

Top 5 Reason Domainers Resist New gTLDs

There is a lot of press and talk about what the domainers think about the domain industry as they are being looked at as potential investors in the new gTLD’s. How they perceive the new space is considered by some as pivotal to the profitability of these new domains especially in the early days. I think the reality is that most new gTLD operators are more concerned about being able to get to market at all than they are about registrations from domainers. Many of the owners I have spoken to are fully aware that this is a long term strategy that will develop over time as people become educated about the variety of options and the ways they can be used. However not being able to get to market due to delays is putting a real strain on the new gTLD applicants. A few new TLDs is one thing, a thousand is quite another and ICANN is also feeling the strain from all the interested parties who are under pressure to get to market ASAP so it’s never going to be fast enough.

Domaining.com & TheDomains.com Launch The New gTLD Ticker

The new gTLD ticker is an advertising program, the brain child of Francois Carrillo, Founder and C.E.O of Cybertonic which operates Domaining.com who is in charge of making the ticker work.

New GTLDs Will Change Internet User Behavior Drive Social Media Industry Growth

The sentence like structure of new Generic Top Level Domains (GTLDs) like hotels.nyc or mountain.bike will change the way that internet users think search and navigate the internet says Scott Alliy a domain name expert and Internet marketing pioneer.

Preparing for New gTLDs (for Domain Name Investors)

I’ve gone through the entire gamut of emotions and opinions about new gTLDs. If you search online back far enough, you can find a few of my rants stating that adding anything more than .com, .net, and .org is a terrible idea (this was when they were proposing .info and .biz). Obviously, I’ve warmed up to the idea today and have a different view. I’ve been directly involved in assisting 10 or so applicants to submit 60 new gTLD applications. I’ve been a domainer, worked for a registry, and now, work for a registrar so I’ve seen the industry from all sides.

Are Domainers Concerned by New gTLDs?

I recently spoke on the phone to a French domainer about new gTLDs. There are not so many of them in France that can make decent money from reselling domain names. His story was pretty straightforward: “my list is ready and I have not used any pre-registration platform. I will register when new domains extensions are open to all”. No mention of any Landrush or Sunrise period. Of course, no word about the domain names he plans to register. This is a very conservative strategy, and I am not surprised, since there will be plenty of opportunities with so many new Top-Level Domains launching, especially for non-English speakers; even if we consider that English domain names are usually the most profitable ones.

My Take on the New GTLDS – Joe Uddeme

Over the past 18 months a tremendous number of clients and colleagues have been beyond apprehensive regarding the impending introduction of roughly 1,700 new Generic Top Level Domains (GTLDS) into the current marketplace. What will happen with domain values? How will these new domains affect the internet? Who will buy these domains?

Frank Schilling on gTLDs: Greed will trump fear

I read several industry blogs daily and from each one I attempt to extract key points that they make though their posts and comments.

DotWhatever is a new online publication that arrived to fill the current gTLD void, covering the new era in the domain namespace that has irreversibly arrived.
